But you’re so comfortable that the last thing you want to do is get up from the couch. So what do you do? The answer is simple: you use your iPhone and the right app to remotely turn off your PC (or Mac).

The right app in this situation is the Hobbyist Software-developed and appropriately named Off. You can think of it as a remote for your PC, remote that you can use to turn off your PC when you can’t be bothered to go do it manually. You can also use the app to remotely lock, sleep, log off or restart your PC. As a matter of fact any computer on your network can be remotely turned off, locked, restarted, or put to sleep by using the Off app.

The Off app also comes with a handy timer function. With this function you can set it so that your computer will be turned off at a specific time. That sort of functionality will come in handy if you let your computer download something overnight for example. You can set it so that your computer will turn off once the download is complete – which is a lot better than letting your computer needlessly run the entire night.

Getting the app to work should not be much of a problem. It uses the same tech that iTunes remote uses to connect to the helper on your network. Once you have it set up, you can use Off to remotely control your XP, Vista or Windows 7 powered PC or your Mac OS X 10.5 or later powered Mac. You can use the Off app on any iOS-powered device, be it an iPod Touch, an iPhone or an iPad. And speaking of using the Off app, it must be said that you can use the app is multiple languages. At the time of writing this, Off provides support for English, Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Russian. It must also be said that Off can be password protected to prevent unauthorized use.
